Hay Festival has much to entertain and even more to expand your mind with. For the ‘Woodstock of the Mind’ is no longer just about books. Among the headline guests will be Nobel Laureates VS Naipaul, JMG le Clezio, Paul Nurse and Mohammed ElBaradei. There will be music, too, thanks to performances from Afro Celt Sound System, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ojos de Brujo, Penguin Cafe, Cerys Matthews and Bob Geldolf. In town, Hay-on-Wye has yet more to offer. The Bus Stop Cinema run by Swansea’s Elysium Gallery will be showing short films in the Salem Chapel on 4 June.

James Johnson-Perkins will be the artist in residence at Coachwerks, Brighton in May and April 2011. Here, he has started a research program on astronomy and space travel. He is also instigating an amateur space association to influence and inspire his new work. Coachwerks is a unique artist run, innovative artspace, close to the centre of Brighon. It currently supports the work of over thirty artists and makers in purpose built studios and workshops.

Štúrovo je malé pohraničné mesto na juhozápade Slovenska. Oproti nemu stojí historické maďarské mestečko Ostrihom. Prepája ich most Márie Valérie, ktorý bol postavený v roku 1895. Tento most bol zničený počas druhej svetovej vojny, opäovne bol postavený až v roku 2001.

Premostenie si symbolicky pripomína aj umelecký rezidenčný program Strážca mostu, ktorý sa tu už niekoľko rokov koná. „Rezidenciu založil človek, ktorý tu v minulosti žil a takýmto spôsobom chcel nájsť dôvod, aby sa sem mohol vracať. Potom, čo bol dlho zničený most znovu zrekonštruovaný ho napadlo, že by bolo fajn, keby umelci, vedci, filozofi a hudobníci metaforicky strážili tento most tak, že by tu robili umenie, literatúru alebo hudbu. Projekt vznikol pred desiatimi rokmi. Ja som v poradí už osemnástým strážcom mostu,“ vysvetľuje Angličan James Johnson-Perkins, jeden z umelcov participujúcich na rezidencii.

A akým projektom sa tu prezentuje? „Vymýšľam masky, kresby a kostýmy superhrdinov na základe prianí ľudi. Spoločne ich potom vytvárame. Oni si ich oblečú a ja ich fotím a točím na rôznych miestach v rôznych situáciách v Štúrove aj Ostrihome, teda na opačných stranách mostu.“ Výstava Jamesových prác prebehne v 12. marca 2011 v Štúrove.

The Štúrovo Super Hero Society. A solo exhibition of new work by British artist James Johnson-Perkins created during his 6-month residency with the Bridge Guard Residency Program in Štúrovo, Slovakia. During his residency Johnson-Perkins created a fictitious group of amateur Eastern European freedom fighters. Every character has a super hero persona and mask. They each have special powers and individual characteristics, some of which are derived from Hungarian and Slovakian unique cultural identities.

In his work the artist often explores childhood nostalgia using diverse social groups, through role-play and games. In this exhibition he will be presenting a series of vinyl drawings, a collection of masks and a short film. The film follows of a selection of local volunteer heroes acting out various super-characters in prominent locations. The film soundtrack is a newly commissioned violin piece created by local musician Palkó Trencsíkpalkó. This was recorded with Hungarian and Slovakian cartoon overdubs by Attila Lukács Jr. Palkós band Jóvilágvan will be performing at the exhibition at 7pm.

The box is a mini viewing room in the main Arts Centre foyer showing artists' films. Seasons 2 & 3 of the box have many voices: in Season 1 there are 26 short films, two riveting ghost stories, a record of an amazing moving sculpture and the opinions of twenty Welsh people; while Season 2 shows captivating works by five artists from the UK and China.
Season 3

Works by five artists: Elen Bonner, Yang Zhifei, Tom Marshman, Harry Meadows and James Johnson Perkins.

Elen Bonner shows ‘The Attack Caused Immense Harm to Wales I Presume? Treachery of the Blue Books RJ Derfel 1854’ (2010) which wittily questions identity, language and culture.

Tom Marshman’s work includes performance, photography, installation and film. These examples of his video work address mundane situations in a humorous, playful and eccentric way.

Harry Meadows is a London based artist who uses digital animation and printing processes allied with symbolic imagery in his striking film work.

James Johnson Perkins’ work casts a nostalgic gaze at adolescent pop culture, including Lego models, retro computer games and TV programmes.

Yang Zhifei from Fujian China shows Day Dreams. Yang Zhifei is a Chinese and Netherlands based artist who is interested in researching the relationship between the real world and the world of dreams; this theme persists throughout all her works. Yang Zhifei is one of three Chinese artists selected for the box by artist/curator Chen Wei.
